Continuing Education

The Iowa Dental Board accepts NetCE courses.

Dentists and Dental Hygienists are required 30 hours every two years, 12 hours of which may be completed by self-study.*
Additional requirements include:

  • Dentists and Dental Hygienists are required a minimum of 1 hour in infection control standards as required by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, every two-year licensing period.
  • Dentists and Dental Hygienists are required a minimum of 1 hour in the area of Iowa jurisprudence, every two-year licensing period.
  • Dentists who prescribe opioids to patients must complete a minimum of 1 hour in the area of opioids, every two-year licensing period.
  • Dentists with a deep sedation/general anesthesia or moderate (conscious) sedation permit are required to complete 6 hours in the area of sedation, every two-year licensing period.
  • All licensees who regularly examine, attend, counsel or treat adults/children are required to complete 2 hours in adult/child abuse identification and reporting, within six months of employment; followed by a 1 hour recertification training, every three years thereafter.**

Beginning with DEA initial registrations or renewals starting June 27, 2023, all DEA-registered practitioners (with the exception of DVM-only license holders) are required 8 hours on treating and managing patients with opioid or other substance use disorders, including the appropriate clinical use of all FDA-approved drugs for the treatment of a substance use disorder; or the safe pharmacological management of dental pain and screening, brief intervention, and referral to treatment of patients with (or at risk of developing) opioid and other substance use disorders, one-time only.

Dental Assistants are required 20 hours every two years, 12 hours of which may be completed by self-study.*
Additional requirements include:

  • A minimum of 1 of the 20 hours must be in infection control standards as required by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, every two years.
  • A minimum of 1 of the 20 hours must be in the area of Iowa jurisprudence, every two years.
  • Dental Assistants with an additional radiography qualification are required to complete 2 hours in dental radiology, every two years.
  • All licensees who regularly examine, attend, counsel or treat adults/children are required to complete 2 hours in adult/child abuse identification and reporting, within six months of employment; followed by a 1 hour recertification training, every three years thereafter.**

* NetCE courses are considered self-study.

** Adult/child abuse cannot be taken from an out-of-state provider and must include Iowa Law.
