How many credits do Physician Assistants need for their Maintenance of Certification?
Certified Physician Assistants have a 10-year certification process divided into five two-year CME cycles. During each two-year cycle, 100 CME credits must be earned, with at least 50 of those credits being Category 1. The remaining 50 credits can be Category 1, Category 2, or a combination of both.
Do NetCE courses meet the requirements for earning CME/MOC credits?
Yes, NetCE courses are considered Category 1 CME because NetCE is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME). NetCE also reports to CE Broker, ABIM, ABS, ABA, ABP, ABPath and ABO. Learn more here.
What is required during the final two years of the 10-year certification cycle?
During the 5th renewal cycle (the 9th and 10th year), Physician Assistants must pass the Physician Assistant National Recertifying Exam (PANRE) in addition to earning the required CME credits.
Do CME providers need to submit separate MOC applications to the certifying boards?
No, accredited CME providers, like NetCE, do not need to submit separate MOC applications for approval to the certifying boards that are collaborating with the ACCME. Instead, CME providers can use the ACCME’s Program and Activity Reporting System (PARS) to register activities for these programs and report learner completion data directly to the certifying boards.
Who regulates the CME requirements for PAs?
The American Academy of Physician Assistants (AAPA) regulates the continuing education (CME) requirements for Physician Assistants. The National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA) follows the AAPA’s guidelines, certifies Physician Assistants, and assists them in logging their CME. NetCE provides instant certificates, automatic reporting, and downloadable transcripts for easy access to your CME credits.
Are there any state-specific requirements for Pharmacology CME for PAs?
Yes, if there is a pharmacology requirement, it is regulated and enforced by the individual state. This requirement is linked to a particular qualification associated with the Physician Assistant’s state license. For example, in Ohio, Physician Assistants with prescriptive authority (license numbers ending in RX) must meet state-specific pharmacology CME requirements. NetCE has an expansive pharmacology CME library included in All Access.
