New York Psychologists

Continuing Education (CE) credits for psychologists are provided through the co-sponsorship of the American Psychological Association (APA) Office of Continuing Education in Psychology (CEP). The APA CEP Office maintains responsibility for the content of the programs.

All courses must be taken from psychology providers approved by the State Education Department on the basis of an application, fee, and the requirements in Education Law and Commissioner's Regulations. Only courses taken from approved providers on or after January 1, 2021 are acceptable.*

Continuing Education Requirement

Beginning January 1, 2021, each Licensed Psychologist must complete 36 hours of approved continuing education courses for each triennial registration period. All courses must be taken from psychology providers approved by the State Education Department on the basis of an application, fee, and the requirements in Education Law and Commissioner's Regulations. Only courses taken from approved providers on or after January 1, 2021 are acceptable.*

Psychologists are required 36 hours every three years, 12 of which may be completed by self-study. At initial licensure, licensees must complete two (2) hours on child abuse identification and reporting.

Beginning with registration periods starting April 1, 2023, licensees are required three (3) hours on the topic of appropriate professional boundaries every renewal. Licensees with registration periods beginning prior to 4/1/2023 do not need to complete the coursework until their next registration period.
