ADA CERP does not approve or endorse individual courses or instructors, nor does it imply acceptance of credit hours by boards of dentistry. The New Mexico Board of Dental Health Care accepts courses from any provider who is ADA approved.

Continuing Education

Attention New Mexico Dental Professionals: The Boards and Commissions staff will process renewals without the proof of CE credit needed for renewal during the pendency of the public health emergency instituted by Executive Order 2020-004. When the public health emergency is lifted, Boards and Commissions staff will send out a notice to licensees stating that the licensee has 6 months, depending upon the Board or Commission, to submit their proof of CE or be subject to discipline by the Board. The New Mexico Board of Dental Health Care accepts NetCE courses.

Dentists are required 60 hours every three years, 30 of which may be completed by self-study.* Licensees with an active DEA registration are required to complete 3 hours of continuing education in understanding pharmacology and the risks of controlled substances, basic awareness of the problem of abuse, addiction and diversion, awareness of state and federal regulations for prescription controlled substances, management of the treatment of pain every renewal.

Beginning with DEA initial registrations or renewals starting June 27, 2023, all DEA-registered practitioners (with the exception of DVM-only license holders) are required 8 hours on treating and managing patients with opioid or other substance use disorders, including the appropriate clinical use of all FDA-approved drugs for the treatment of a substance use disorder; or the safe pharmacological management of dental pain and screening, brief intervention, and referral to treatment of patients with (or at risk of developing) opioid and other substance use disorders, one-time only.

Dental Hygienists are required 45 hours every three years, 30 of which may be completed by self-study.*

Dental Assistants are required 30 hours every three years, 30 of which may be completed by self-study.*

The New Mexico Department of Health encourages certifying practitioners to complete at least 2 hours related to the medicinal use of cannabis each year.

*NetCE courses are considered self-study.
