Florida Physician Assistants CE Requirements, Accreditations & Approvals
Florida Physician Assistants
In support of improving patient care, NetCE is jointly accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME), the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE), and the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC), to provide continuing education for the healthcare team.
As a jointly accredited provider, NetCE is authorized to award Category 1 CME Credit to physician assistants certified through the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA).
The Florida Board of Medicine accepts courses from any provider who is ACCME-accredited and awards AMA PRA Category 1 Credit ™.
In addition, NetCE is an approved provider through the Florida Board of Medicine, CE Broker Provider #50-2405. NetCE will electronically report successful course completions to CE Broker.
Continuing Education Requirement
PAs are required 98 general hours every two years, or must show evidence of continuing education as required by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA). Physician Assistants registered with the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) and authorized to prescribe controlled substances must complete 10 of the 98 hours in the specialty area of the supervising physician, 3 of which must be on the safe and effective prescribing of controlled substance medications. Mandates include:
- Two (2) hours of Medical Error Prevention every renewal, in addition to general hours.
- Two (2) hours of Domestic Violence every third renewal, included in general hours.
Beginning with DEA initial registrations or renewals starting June 27, 2023, all DEA-registered practitioners (with the exception of DVM-only license holders) are required 8 hours on treating and managing patients with opioid or other substance use disorders, including the appropriate clinical use of all FDA-approved drugs for the treatment of a substance use disorder, one-time only.
If renewing a license for the first time, physician assistants are required to complete 97 general hours or show evidence of continuing education as required by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA).
In addition, for all first time renewals physician assistants are required:
- Two (2) hours of Medical Error Prevention; and
- One (1) hour on HIV/AIDS, one-time only.
Anesthesiologist Assistants (AAs): are required 38 general hours every two years. Mandates include:
- Two (2) hours of Medical Error Prevention every renewal, in addition to general hours.
- Two (2) hours of Domestic Violence every third renewal, included in general hours.
If renewing a license for the first time, anesthesiologist assistants are exempt from completing the general continuing education requirements and are only required to complete the following:
- Two (2) hours of Medical Error Prevention; and
- One (1) hour on HIV/AIDS, one-time only.
