Florida Physicians CE Requirements, Accreditations & Approvals
Florida Physicians
In
support of improving patient care, NetCE is jointly accredited by the Accreditation
Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME), the Accreditation Council for
Pharmacy Education (ACPE), and the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC), to
provide continuing education for the healthcare team.
The Florida Board of Medicine accepts courses from any provider who is ACCME-accredited and awards AMA PRA Category 1 Credit™.
The Florida Board of Osteopathic Medicine accepts a maximum of 8 hours from any provider who is AMA PRA Category 1 Credit™.*
In addition, NetCE is an approved provider through the Florida Board of Medicine, CE Broker Provider #50-2405. NetCE will electronically report successful course completions to CE Broker.
Continuing Education Requirement
Attention Florida Physicians: As part of the response efforts to the Novel Coronavirus 2019 (COVID-19), State Surgeon General Scott Rivkees has extended the licensure renewal expiration date until March 31, 2021 for any health care practitioner with licensure renewal deadlines between December 31, 2020 and March 1, 2021. MDs are required 38 general hours of AMA PRA Category 1 Credit™ every
two years.
Mandates include:
- 2 hours of Medical Error Prevention every two years, in addition to general hours.
- 2 hours of safe and effective prescribing of controlled substance medications every two years, included in general hours.
- 2 hours of Domestic Violence every third renewal, included in general hours.
- NEW 1 hour on human trafficking, one-time requirement. The course is included in general hours and must be completed by January 1, 2021.
If renewing a license for the first time, physicians are exempt from the general CE requirements and are only required to complete:
- 2 hours of Medical Error Prevention; and
- 1 hour on HIV/AIDS
DOs are required 40 general hours every two years, 20 of which must be AOA
Category 1. A maximum of 8 hours may be taken by home
study.*
Mandates include:
- 1 hour of Laws and Rules/Professional Medical Ethics (must be live/participatory) every two years, included in general hours.
- 2 hours of Medical Error Prevention (must be live/participatory) every two years, included in general hours.
- 2 hours of safe and effective prescribing of controlled substance medications every two years, included in general hours.
- 2 hours of Domestic Violence every third renewal (may be home study), in addition to general hours.
If renewing a license for the first time, osteopathic physicians are required to complete the 40 general hours, 20 of which must be AOA Category 1. A maximum of 8 hours may be taken by home study.*
In addition, for all first time renewals osteopathic physicians licensed subsequent to July 1 of the second year of the biennium are required:
- 1 hour of Laws and Rules/Professional Medical Ethics (must be live/participatory)
- 2 hours of Medical Error Prevention (must be live/participatory)
- NEW 1 hour on human trafficking, one-time requirement (may be home study)
In addition, for all first time renewals osteopathic physicians licensed prior to July 1 of the second year of the biennium are required:
- 1 hour of Laws and Rules/Professional Medical Ethics (must be live/participatory)
- 2 hours of Medical Error Prevention (must be live/participatory)
- 2 hours of safe and effective prescribing of controlled substance medications
- NEW 1 hour on human trafficking, one-time requirement (may be home study)
- 1 hour on HIV/AIDS, one-time requirement (may be home study)
Pursuant to the Florida Department of Health Trauma Center Standards, emergency physicians and pediatric emergency physicians who are licensed or certified to work at a trauma center must complete a minimum of 5 hours of continuing education on trauma-related topics every year, 2 of which must be on the topic of pediatric trauma for pediatric emergency physicians, or if the emergency physician cares for pediatric trauma patients. General surgeons and pediatric surgeons who are licensed or certified to work at a trauma center must complete 10 hours of continuing education on trauma-related topics every year, 5 of which must be on the topic of pediatric trauma for pediatric surgeons, or if the general surgeon manages pediatric trauma patients.
*NetCE courses are considered AMA PRA Category 1 Credit™ home study.
