Continuing Education Requirement

Attention Nebraska Physicians: As of 6/28/21, the governor has announced that the COVID-19 State of Emergency expired on 6/30/21. As a result, physician licenses that were deferred per Executive Order 20-10 will have their expiration dates extended to 10/31/21, and must be renewed by that date. If the license has already been renewed, this deferral and extension does not apply. Additionally, within the next 30 days, the Licensure Unit will send a postcard to those licensees who have not renewed, advising that they will have until 10/31/21 to renew. For more information, please visit

MDs and DOs are required 50 hours of AMA PRA Category 1 Credit™ every two years.

Beginning with renewals on or after October 1, 2018, licensees who prescribe controlled substances must complete at least 3 hours on prescribing opiates, which may include, but is not limited to, education regarding prescribing and administering opiates, the risks and indicators regarding development of addiction to opiates, and emergency opiate situations. One half-hour of the 3 hours must cover the Prescription Drug Monitoring Program (PDMP) described in sections 71-2454 to 71-2456 of the Nebraska Revised Statutes.
