North Carolina Dental Professionals

ADA CERP does not approve or endorse individual courses or instructors, nor does it imply acceptance of credit hours by boards of dentistry. The North Carolina State Board of Dental Examiners accepts courses from any provider who is ADA or AGD approved.

Continuing Education

The North Carolina State Board of Dental Examiners accepts NetCE courses.

Dentists are required 15 hours each year, all of which may be completed by home study.* One (1) hour must be on substance abuse and mental health every two calendar years.

Dentists who prescribe controlled substances are required one (1) hour each year on controlled substances prescribing practices and controlled substance prescribing for chronic pain management.

Beginning with DEA initial registrations or renewals starting June 27, 2023, all DEA-registered practitioners (with the exception of DVM-only license holders) are required 8 hours on treating and managing patients with opioid or other substance use disorders, including the appropriate clinical use of all FDA-approved drugs for the treatment of a substance use disorder; or the safe pharmacological management of dental pain and screening, brief intervention, and referral to treatment of patients with (or at risk of developing) opioid and other substance use disorders, one-time only.

Dental Hygienists are required 6 hours each year, all of which may be completed by home study.* One (1) hour must be on substance abuse and mental health every two calendar years.

Dental Hygienists who administer local anesthetics are required two (2) hours each year of approved continuing education that includes a review of local anesthetic technique, contraindications, systemic complications, medical emergencies related to local anesthesia, and a general overview of dental office emergencies.

Limited supervision Dental Hygienists are required six (6) hours on the topic of medical office emergencies each year.

* NetCE courses are considered home study.
