The Maryland Board of Physicians accepts courses from any provider who is ACCME-accredited and awards AMA PRA Category 1 Credit ™.

Continuing Education Requirement

PAs are required 50 hours every two years, 42 of which must be AMA PRA Category 1 Credit ™, or must provide proof of maintenance of certification through the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants. A minimum of 8 hours must be on the topics of pharmacology.*

All physician assistants applying for a new or renewal registration to dispense or prescribe controlled dangerous substances from the Office of Controlled Substances Administration (OCSA) must complete a one-time requirement of 2 hours on the prescribing or dispensing of controlled dangerous substances.

For first renewal on or after 4/1/2022, all health care practitioners are required to complete an implicit bias training program, one-time only.

Beginning with DEA initial registrations or renewals starting June 27, 2023, all DEA-registered practitioners (with the exception of DVM-only license holders) are required 8 hours on treating and managing patients with opioid or other substance use disorders, including the appropriate clinical use of all FDA-approved drugs for the treatment of a substance use disorder, one-time only.

* For the first renewal after initial licensure, licensees are exempt from general continuing education and only the 8 hours of pharmacology topics are required.
