Nevada Physician Assistants CE Requirements, Accreditations & Approvals
Nevada Physician Assistants
In support of improving patient care, NetCE is jointly accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME), the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE), and the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC), to provide continuing education for the healthcare team.
As a jointly accredited provider, NetCE is authorized to award Category 1 CME Credit to physician assistants certified through the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA).
The Nevada State Board of Medical Examiners and the Nevada State Board of Osteopathic Medicine accept courses from any provider who is ACCME-accredited and awards AMA PRA Category 1 Credit ™.
Continuing Education Requirement
PAs are required 40 hours of AMA PRA Category 1 Credit ™ every two years, at least 20 of which must be within the licensee's scope of practice or specialty. Requirements include:
- 2 hours in ethics, pain management, and/or addiction care every renewal.
- Beginning with renewals on or after January 1, 2024, all physician assistants are required at least 2 hours one-time only related to the screening, brief intervention, and referral to treatment approach to substance use disorder, within two years of initial licensure. Current Medical Board licensees must fulfill the requirement on or before the 2025 renewal period.
- 2 hours in evidence-based suicide prevention and awareness within two years of initial licensure and every four years thereafter.
- There is a one-time requirement of 4 hours in bioterrorism within two years of initial licensure.
- Physician assistants registered to dispense controlled substances Beginning with renewals on or after June 30, 2019, are required 2 hours in the misuse and abuse of controlled substances, the prescribing of opioids, or addiction; or screening, brief intervention, and referral to treatment approach to substance use disorder.
- Physician assistants reporting to psychiatrists are required at least 2 hours relating to cultural competency and diversity, equity and inclusion every renewal.
- NEW Beginning with applications and first renewals on and after January 1, 2024, physician assistants who provide or supervise the provision of emergency medical services in a hospital or primary care (practice of family medicine, pediatrics, internal medicine, obstetrics and gynecology and midwifery) must submit proof of at least 2 hours of training in the stigma, discrimination and unrecognized bias toward persons who have acquired or are at a high risk of acquiring human immunodeficiency virus, within 2 years after beginning to provide such services or care. (NV SB-439 enacted 6/15/2023).
Beginning with DEA initial registrations or renewals starting June 27, 2023, all DEA-registered practitioners (with the exception of DVM-only license holders) are required 8 hours on treating and managing patients with opioid or other substance use disorders, including the appropriate clinical use of all FDA-approved drugs for the treatment of a substance use disorder, one-time only.
Licensees who care for patients 60+ years are encouraged to take up to 4 hours for twice the credit in Geriatrics and Gerontology, or Alzheimer's Disease or other forms of dementia (for a maximum 8 hours per biennium).
Licensees are encouraged to complete CE concerning methods for educating patients on how to effectively manage medications, including the ability of the patient to request to have the symptom or purpose for which a drug is prescribed included on the label attached to the drug container.
Licensees are encouraged to complete, as a part of their continuing education, training and education in the diagnosis of rare diseases, including, but not limited to, recognizing the symptoms of pediatric cancer and interpreting family history to determine whether such symptoms indicate a normal childhood illness or a condition that requires additional examination.
OPAs are required 20 hours of AMA PRA Category 1 Credit ™ or AOA Category 1-A Credit, and current certification through the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA) each year. Requirements include:
- Beginning with renewals on or after January 1, 2024, all osteopathic physician assistants are required at least 2 hours one-time only related to the screening, brief intervention, and referral to treatment approach to substance use disorder, within two years of initial licensure.
- Osteopathic physician assistants registered to dispense controlled substances are required 2 hours in the misuse and abuse of controlled substances, the prescribing of opioids, or addiction; or screening, brief intervention, and referral to treatment approach to substance use disorder each renewal.
