Rhode Island Physicians
In support of improving patient care, NetCE is jointly accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME), the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE), and the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC), to provide continuing education for the healthcare team.
The Rhode Island Board of Medical Licensure and Discipline accepts courses from any provider who is ACCME-accredited and awards AMA PRA Category 1 Credit™.
Continuing Education Requirement
MDs and DOs are required 40 hours of AMA PRA Category 1 Credit™ every two years. There are no specific topics required by the Rhode Island Board of Medical Licensure and Discipline for the 2024 license renewal cycle.
Effective January 4, 2022, Schedule II opioid prescribers have a one-time requirement of 8 hours of Category I CME in any or all of the following topics: a) Appropriate prescribing of opioids for pain; b) Pharmacology; c) Adverse events; d) Potential for dependence; e) Tolerance; f) Substance use disorder; g) Alternatives to opioids for pain management.
Beginning with DEA initial registrations or renewals starting June 27, 2023, all DEA-registered practitioners (with the exception of DVM-only license holders) are required 8 hours on treating and managing patients with opioid or other substance use disorders, including the appropriate clinical use of all FDA-approved drugs for the treatment of a substance use disorder, one-time only.
Effective August 1, 2019, all licensed physicians have a one-time requirement of a minimum of one hour on the diagnosis, treatment, and care of patients with cognitive impairments including, but not limited to, Alzheimer's disease and dementia.
Practitioners who issue written certifications for the medical use of marijuana are required 3 hours of Category 1 CME on the topic as a part of the required hours for renewal every two years.
