Before proceeding, take a moment to consider the following question:
“What factors outside individual patient choices influence health outcomes in your daily practice?”
Think about the patients you saw last week. What circumstances shaped their ability to arrive on time, follow up on referrals, afford medications, or trust your recommendations? Write down two to three factors that come to mind.
You may have identified things like transportation challenges, insurance coverage, language access, neighborhood resources, or prior healthcare experiences. These are not incidental. They are the terrain through which structural racism operates.
